Rumors of a new, more powerful Switch are almost as old as the Switch itself. There’s a desire for a Pro version of the popular Nintendo hybrid console from consumers. There’s also a likely need for Nintendo to adopt a heftier punch in the power department with the PS5 and Xbox Series X on the market. Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser talked to the Washington Post about what this might look like in the near future in terms of new hardware. Here’s what he had to say.

We know a Switch Pro, or something with a similar name, is coming at some point. Nintendo is known for offering new, more powerful versions of its handheld consoles after launch. While the Switch isn’t just a handheld, it is in need of a refresh. Everything from 4K resolutions to a larger handheld screen is on the table and under speculation. Bowser told the Washington Post that when a change does come, it won’t be for the sake of keeping things fresh.

Bowser explained, “We are always looking at technology and how technology can enhance gameplay experiences. It’s not technology for technology’s sake.” That likely means that we won’t just see a suped-up Switch Pro. There’s likely going to be some change that enhances the Switch experience. Bowser adds, “Do you want to apply it on current existing hardware or platforms, or do you want to wait for the next platform? And then what’s the right gameplay experience with that? There’s a host of factors that goes into it, and it’s something we’re always looking at.”

We likely won’t see Nintendo abandon the Switch yet, but it makes sense that a Pro console would help to reinvent what’s possible on the peripheral. Hopefully, we find out something soon.
