We spent a few years talking about next-gen consoles. Now, we’re seeing a rise in something new but not quite next-gen. The launch of the Atari VCS seemed to kickstart interest in retro gaming brought to the modern age. During an E3 2021 press conference presentation, historic game console name Intellivision revealed their new retro-but-new console, the Intellivision Amico. Here’s what we learned about this new console that’s a must-have for retro fans.

Amico

The Amico is a modern take on the classic Intellivision consoles. First revealed in 2018 conceptually, the console is finally arriving this October. The Intellivision Amico will mostly feature 2D and 2.5D games. 3D games will be allowed, as long as they are easy to play and easy to learn. Intellivision Entertainment is providing studios with the resources they need to develop games to put in their curated library of games. As you can see from the controllers, the peripheral largely matches the original Intellivision console.

The Amico comes with six premium, pre-loaded games, with additional games ranging from $2.99 – $9.99. Aimed at a family audience, no game is mature or features mature content. Every game on the Amico will be rated E for Everyone. New versions of many Intellivision games with improved graphics and sound have been announced, including some from Imagic. New versions of several classic Atari games as well as other reimagined arcade classics such as Moon Patrol and BurgerTime are expected around or near launch.

Amico

The Intellivision Amico comes bundled with two controllers, designed to be ambidextrous for right or left-handed preference. The controllers can charge when they are placed into their cradle on top of the console or charge using a wired USB-C connection. The battery charges in 2 hours and provides 4–6 hours of continuous gameplay on a full charge. While the controller may seem limiting, the Amico does exactly what it sets out to do. This is a modern take on a retro system, and in my eyes, it’s done quite masterfully.

Amico

As of now, there are 86 games in development for the Amico. Many will be available near or at launch, but others will come down the road. The consoles will run for $249.99 USD and a pre-order deposit of $100 USD is required to reserve a unit. The console comes in Glacier White, Graphite Black, Vintage Woodgrain, and the Gamestop-exclusive Galaxy Purple.
