It’s that time again y’all! E3 2021 is right on our heels, and I am so very excited, despite knowing that the week of E3 is going to be exhausting for me and the rest of the PG staff. However, this year is unique for several reasons, so I have some predictions of things we may see this year.
Zelda Announcements
Let’s start off with a given. This is the 35th anniversary of the Legend of Zelda, and I have a hard time believing that the Skyward Sword remake is the only bit of news we’ll see this year. However, I don’t think we’ll get any major news for Breath of the Wild 2, though I would happily be wrong. I would love to see a Wind Waker Switch port or a Twilight Princess Switch port. However, after the success of the Link’s Awakening remake, maybe we’ll see an Oracle of Ages/Seasons remake? Or perhaps we’ll see another handheld Zelda title getting the remake treatment?
Persona Announcements
This also happens to be an anniversary year for the Persona franchise. After 25 years of the Persona series, I would be very surprised if Atlus didn’t announce something at E3 this year. Now, what exactly they announce is a toss-up. Personally, I’m hoping for a Switch port of Persona 4 Golden, as well as a PC and Switch release for Persona 3. However, it has been long enough since the release of Persona 5/P5 Royal that we might get a tease for Persona 6. Alternately, we might get Persona Q3 or a port of Persona Q and Q2 on Switch.
Metroid Announcements
Metroid hasn’t seen a whole lot of love from Nintendo in a while. We’ve been hearing that a new Metroid Prime game is in the works since its announcement at E3 2017, and with it being the 35th Anniversary of Metroid, it just makes sense to find out more. However, even if we don’t find out more about Metroid Prime 4, we may see ports for Switch, remasters, or even whole new games that aren’t Metroid Prime related.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2.0 Update
Last year, Nintendo revealed that we would be getting content updates for Animal Crossing: New Horizons all throughout 2021. They have been surprisingly low-key though in the past few months, and Nintendo hasn’t given many actual substantial updates to one of the most successful releases of 2020. Because of that, I think we may see a large update coming to New Horizons with a surprise announcement during Nintendo’s showcase. Maybe we’ll meet Brewster and some other fan favorites?
Psychonauts 2 Gameplay
In non-Nintendo-focused news, we may finally see a firm release date for Psychonauts 2, along with some new gameplay. We know the game is meant to release in 2021, but we still don’t have a firm release window yet. As someone that is very excited about Psychonauts 2, I really hope we find out more at E3.
Final Fantasy XVI (and Final Fantasy in general)
After the trailer we saw for Final Fantasy XVI last year, I would be shocked if we didn’t see more information from Square Enix this year about it. In fact, I would wager that it is much more likely that we see FFXVI content than the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake. However, in my wildest, perfect fantasies, I would love information about how that is coming along too.
Fire Emblem Remasters (or a new game?)
It is the 30th Anniversary of the Fire Emblem franchise this year, and that makes for a perfect opportunity for Intelligent Systems and Nintendo. After the success of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, along with the last few games in the franchise, it would be strange to not capitalize on this anniversary. Perhaps we could get the remaster of Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn which has been rumored for a while. Alternately, it may be time for them to unveil the next major title in the franchise. Or, they could release a game in the franchise that never came to the west before.
Tomb Raider Announcements
It is Tomb Raider’s 25th Anniversary (a theme in this article) and as such, now is a perfect time for more Lara Croft adventures. It has been 3 years since Shadow of the Tomb Raider released, and it just seems like the perfect time for the next stage in Lara’s adventures. Maybe we’ll get some remastered versions of the classics instead?
Hellblade 2 Information
After the success of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, I know I’m not the only one hyped up for Hellblade: Senua’s Saga. Xbox’s E3 showcase would be a perfect time to show us more information on what Senua’s next adventure will be like. Team Ninja has been fairly quiet about it too, so it just feels like the perfect time.
Hollow Knight Silksong
Okay, last but not least is a prediction that is more wishful thinking than anything with any substantial evidence. It has been a long time since we’ve heard anything about Silksong, and I’m really hoping E3 brings us some solid answers. Will Hornet’s adventure be coming soon? Will Team Cherry keep us in the dark a bit longer? Can we at least get some sort of progress info?
Honestly, there are dozens of anniversaries this year and dozens of games I would love to see at E3. Some are highly unlikely, and there’s one that I refuse to mention because every time I do I wind up proven wrong. This year’s E3 seems full of potential and promise, so hopefully, all these companies bring their best.
