I love sandbox games. There is something so relaxing, calming, and chill about being able to play a game where you can go wherever and do whatever you want. I also love games that are just plain weird. It turns out Just Die Already ticks both of these boxes!

DoubleMoose Games has created a game to rival the absurdity of Goat Simulator. Just Die Already is an “old people mayhem simulator” that just so happens to be designed by the creators of Goat Simulator. When I tell you that this game is absurd, I’m not kidding. It is ridiculous in a way that only Goat Simulator has ever been able to come close to matching.

In Just Die Already, you are kicked out of your retirement home and are set loose upon the city. You acquire a list of quests/challenges called a bucket list that gives you the opportunity to earn tickets by doing dangerous, ridiculous things. Want to run over cars with a steam roller? You can do that in this game. Do you want to have your head detached and beat other people with it? That can be arranged too!

By doing various tasks and collecting tickets, you can unlock various new items and weapons with which to cause mayhem. You can carry around everything from Bee Grenades, Guns, Salami, Swords, Laser Guns, and everything in between. There are even various outfits you can dress your elderly “boomer” in, such as a clown outfit.

Of course, being an old person means you’re understandably very fragile. The ultimate goal is to use your tickets to buy access to a retirement home in Florida. However, to get there you’ll need to mark off all sorts of dangerous things off that aforementioned bucket list. As a result, you will likely lose limbs, bleed a lot, and have to respawn a few hundred times.

You can beat other NPC’s with your severed limbs though, including your head. Somehow the elderly can survive without their head attached, who knew? In addition to all the crazy exploits you can get up to, the sandbox world is full of secrets, hidden areas, treasures, and hazards. You can get eaten by a shark, for example.

Part of the fun of Just Die Already is exploring the colorful world and finding solutions to all of the hidden things that are scattered throughout the game. What makes it even better is that you can play in online multiplayer with up to 3 other people. You can either work together to resolve challenges or cause utter mayhem and beat each other with things.

Just Die Already is a game of experimentation, exploration, and enjoying things at your own pace. DoubleMoose Games did a fantastic job with it, to the point that I only have one complaint. The driving controls are absolutely atrocious.

Driving things in Just Die Already is an exercise in frustration. The handling of the vehicles is very difficult. Need to drive in a straight line? That works great. Want to turn or line yourself up differently? Good luck!

Otherwise, Just Die Already is a fun, bloody, chaotic game that will have you laughing and trying to figure out what other crazy things you can do next. It is the perfect successor to Goat Simulator and is perfect just to blow off some steam in an afternoon.
