I’ve made reference to it several times already, but there are only two and a half PS5s in the whole world. The half of a PS5 was broken by an angry child that listens to whatever that Ninja thing is that said it is ok to get angry and smash things. Nonetheless, the consensus among consumers is to buy a PS5 as soon as it is available, or that seems to be the idea for some. However, since its November release, that has been hard as the stocks have been quite low and demand high. Of course, not as low as I am joking.

In a chat with analysts, according to Takashi Mochizuki of Bloomberg, Sony has warned of low stocks on the console for the foreseeable future, “through 2022.” In financial reports from late April, the company has stated they have sold 7.8-million units through March 31st. The aim, seemingly to keep pace with the PS4 sales over the same period, is to sell a further 14.8-million units by the end of the fiscal year. The previous generation console sold a total of 115.9-million units, to this day. That number can still rise in the prolonged cross-over period.

Sony’s CFO Hiroki Totoki is quoted as saying in the briefing, “I don’t think demand is calming down this year[,] and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PS5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with [the] demand.” Following some dry business/numbers talk from Mochizuki and Bloomberg about market share prices and projections falling short, Totoki said, “We have sold more than 100-million units of the PS4 and considering our market share and reputation, I can’t imagine demand dropping easily.”

Of course, the reason for Sony’s low capacity for the high demand from consumers falls down to the COVID-19 pandemic and production. Several components are in high demand right now, some of which Sony is finding hard to track down. This lack of components with the high demand is creating a rather large cavern between consumers wanting to give the company money, and the company getting said money which would match former projections by analysts. So, little Timmy, you might not be getting a PS5 for another year. Here is an image of both versions to stare at for a while.
