Blizzard Entertainment has unexpectedly announced that the newest World of Warcraft expansion set (Shadowlands) is now temporarily 20% off. I want to strongly emphasize the use of the word “temporarily” in that last sentence, however. If there’s one thing Blizzard is most assuredly not known for, it’s long-lasting sales on any of their games or in-game content. If you want to upgrade your World of Warcraft account so that you can experience all the new content, or introduce a friend to the game who can join you on your adventures, you’d better act fast.

The sale began yesterday, April 29th, 2021, and runs through Sunday, May 2nd. The 20% discount applies to all three editions of the Shadowlands expansion. That is to say, the base edition and the so-called “Heroic” and “Epic” editions have all had their prices reduced for that time period. As you might expect, the base edition contains nothing more than the expansion itself.

The “Heroic Edition” contains the expansion set, a one-time-use boost that will elevate any character to level 50, and an epic mount called the “Ensorcelled Everwyrm.” Owning this mount also unlocks a quest line that grants you an exclusive transmogrification set, if that sort of thing appeals to you.

Finally, the “Epic Edition” will get you everything I’ve just listed off in addition to a new pet, cosmetic effects for certain weapon types and your character’s Hearthstone, and thirty days’ worth of game time. Blizzard also notes that owning Shadowlands will additionally net you the free epic ground mount that World of Warcraft’s development team created after holding a community poll a while back. This mount, known as the Wandering Ancient, will become available to you as soon as your copy of Shadowlands is activated on your account and can be accessed through the standard mount menu.

Before I wrap up, I’d like to pass along a side note. If you’re returning to World of Warcraft after a hiatus and aren’t familiar with anything Shadowlands changed or added, you’re in luck. A few months ago, before the expansion launched, I went over many of the sweeping changes brought by this expansion in considerable detail. These changes are (for example) the reason that the aforementioned character boost brings its recipient character up to level 50 in the wake of Shadowlands’ so-called “level squish.” For now, though, I hope to see you in Azeroth!

David Sanders is, at his core, a man who's just trying to get through his game backlog before the heat death of the universe, and yet can't seem to stop adding to said game backlog. He greatly enjoys many different varieties of games, particularly several notable RPGs and turn-based strategy titles. When he's not helping to build or plan computers for friends, he can usually be found gaming on his personal machine or listening to an audiobook to unwind.
