I saw the sun saw fit to rise again, I guess that means we’re doing another one of those mini-convention showcase things that Nintendo has made this world suffer. Look, I don’t mind showing off a game or two, but to make weekly or monthly events is getting right on my nips. I prefer that one great big dump in June-July time, a great big dump in the middle of the year to get everything off your chest; E3 is quite nice as well.

Anyway, onto this week’s State of Play from Sony. It is a Ratchet & Clank-themed one, but that doesn’t mean there is more to show, sadly. So might as well start at the beginning, this isn’t a Christopher Nolan film after all.

We started the show with a display of the upcoming sequel to Subnautica, something I’d been playing a bit of the other week. Subnautica: Below Zero might be in early access on Steam and Epic right now, but the game’s full release (including on consoles) is set for May the 14th. The game set in Canada (it’s not, that’s a joke!) will put you back in the land of horrors for which you’ll never want to go swimming ever again. Creatures of the deep-blue will make you want to jump up and down on your own head so the pain stops.

It is a very interesting little idea, but at this point, I don’t know what more it is adding other than some frozen lands to run over screaming and hooting like Daffy Duck. A very nice-looking showcase of what the game will be, but we’ll all be able to find out more on May the 14th when it releases on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. It was also announced that for those of you who own either a physical or digital copy of the first game, you’ll be able to upgrade to a PS5 (and I assume the same of Xbox too) copy for free.

Moving on to the next short showcase, of the total of three. Among Us is coming to the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S later this year. Though, as you can probably guess with the next game to be shown and that we’re talking about PlayStation, you can dress up as that furry little rat and his robot friend. Yes, for PS4 and PS5 players of Among Us, you’ll be able to play as Ratchet and Clank when the game finally releases on consoles. However, there is no specific date given for the said release.

Onto the main event now, and it was just 15-minute of solid Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart gameplay and cutscenes. A vertical slice showing off the world in action, the alternate dimension, rift jumping, combat, and something just a little… Riveting. I’ll leave now!

Yes, the woman, or as Reddit is probably calling her “why do we need bloody women in our games,” Rivet is the new grey-looking Lombax. We have a little more info on the overall gameplay, showing off what the haptic triggers of the PS5 will be doing to combat. Now it offers alternate weapon modes dependent on how far you pull what I’d assume would be R2, like all games ever. I will say, in motion Rift Apart is gorgeous, using the SSD of the PS5 to make the interdimensional world-hopping smooth. However, like most (myself included), you don’t need to be sold on the game. You are sitting up to 3 AM on eBay trying to find a PS5 in the cheap before the June 11th release date.

That was it. A 20-minute showcase if you don’t include the trailer showing off the same game right after a 15-minute showcase on it and it alone. There isn’t really much to say other than what is already said: Games are brilliant and I want a PS5 to lick a ginger Lombax’s fur. Did I just say that aloud? Oops!
