It takes two to make a thing go right,” to quote Lyn Collins, in possibly the second most sampled James Brown song. It Takes Two is the newest game from that weird fella from the Game Awards, in fact, the only thing that makes the Game Awards worthwhile each year. Josef Fares started out with creating films back in the early 2000s, only coming to games with his 2013 release, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. It had an awful title, but was a middling game that almost sets out to do a David Cage-type narrative but less offensively. That is Fares in nutshell, an inverse David Cage; someone passionate about games.

His three titles are aimed at multiplayer, with his second coming in 2018. A Way Out was about two men escaping prison and the law. Along the way you and the person you are playing with, somehow, create a bit of a bond and have something interesting to talk about. Such as “Why did you not just do as I said and we’d have done that a lot quicker!” His latest venture with EA, It Takes Two escapes the world of surrogate brothers and jumps in bed with a couple. Once again it takes the split-screen co-op multiplayer thing and puts it in the loveliest little package, you either play as Cody or May, a couple planning a divorce.

Well, according to Hazelight’s Twitter, one million people have wanted to traverse a bit of the turbulence that is divorce since March the 26th. Honestly, the last thing I think I’d like to tackle during a pandemic and lockdowns is divorce. Nevertheless, between the critical reception and fan reception, It Takes Two is just making everything go right for the indie studio and Fares’ game direction career. Fares himself said on Twitter, “This shows that there definitely [are] players that also [want] to play co-op only games,” thanking those who have played the game.
