Animal Crossing’s 1.9.0 update just landed a few weeks back in time for Easter and the one-year anniversary of Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ release. Presumably, that means that the next update should be the 2.0 update, which should roll out new features. Historically, 2.0 (3.0 and so on) updates of games like this tend to be big, offering new mechanics, features, etc. So, here are a few major things we’d like to see in that update.

Bulk Crafting:

I am getting so dang tired of having to craft fishing bait one at a time in order to prepare for the fishing tournament. Not to mention the fact that it would be nice to be able to make tools in bulk if you have the materials, just so you can store them for later. A nice bulk crafting system wouldn’t be all that much to ask would it?

More Storage:

I hear your comments already, “But they already expanded our storage!” Yes, and since then we’ve gotten a Mario collab, a Sanrio collab (if you were lucky enough) and there are tons of holidays and new things coming. That doesn’t even take into account if they add new features like farming, Gyroids, or other fan-requested mechanics. There just isn’t enough storage to hold all of that, plus all the clothing they offer.

New Special Characters (or Brewster?):

Look, we’ve all seen Gulliver a thousand times, we’ve met Sahara, we’ve seen Label, and it’s time for some new visitors to our island. On top of that, there has been speculation about Brewster coming to live on our island for ages now, and Nintendo has kept all of that really close to the vest. If they want to draw old players back to the game, this would be a great start for that.

This would also be a great opportunity to showcase characters that new Animal Crossing players haven’t gotten to meet yet, such as Katrina, Gracie, etc. It would be great to have some of these old favorites come in and spice up our islands. It’s a great move for veteran player retention and even better to introduce them to new players.

New Store/Island Upgrades:

Last but not least, I think Animal Crossing: New Horizons needs to let us upgrade the Nook’s Cranny again. In previous games there were 4 store upgrades, so why have we only gotten to upgrade once? You could argue that we’ve had two upgrades, from the tent to the first store, then to the bigger one, but I’m not satisfied with that. Let us have a wider selection of furniture, or even work with Gracie to give us designer furniture like we get designer clothes.

Beyond that, why not let Label or Kicks set up shop in town a little more permanently? Expand the range of bags, shoes, and socks we can get. We need more things to invest our bells in, so perhaps enable us to upgrade the size of our island so we can have more villagers? Or give us something so that those of us who have tons of bells saved have something to use them on.

I’m very excited to see what updates are added to Animal Crossing: New Horizons this year. Now that all the main holidays are established, it will be great to see what the development team has in store for us. Maybe some of the predictions of my other Animal Crossing editorial will come true. Who knows?
