Game delays are a tumultuous topic that has been expounded in the past year exponentially. There are most certainly two sides to the coin. On one side, it’s an absolute pain to wait several more months or even years for a product you’re anticipating. On the other side, it’s a high priority that the game ships in as desirable a state as the developer intends. So, with Deathloop‘s second delay announcement, how are you feeling?

Personally, I’m more than okay with this announcement. The recent debacle with Cyberpunk 2077 receiving three delays and still launching in a broken state on consoles could be viewed as a cause for concern for gamers. However, it is an outlier in the realm of delayed game launches. Some delayed games that launched in prime state to critical acclaim in recent years include Doom EternalThe Last of Us Part IIAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, and Final Fantasy VII: Remake.

With that laundry-list of games that were put up for easy Game of the Year candidates, I parlay that delays are an indication that games deserve to be released in their intended state. Sure, it may cost the publisher/distributor in the short-term, but the long-term credibility that comes from rushed games is irreparable. CD Projekt Red took a massive hit from the release of Cyberpunk 2077. As such, Deathloop gets a pass since previous titles Dishonored and Prey were masterpieces.

So, the immediate downsides? You have to wait for Deathloop for a little while longer. Is there any guarantee that it’ll be polished and perfect upon release? No, Cyberpunk had tons of time and was a mess. Imagine how the title would be viewed if it launched in an even worse state at an earlier date. As such, a few date-pushes can be forgiven on my watch.
