Games are weird little creatures, aren’t they? Any time you recognize someone in a game that isn’t heavily in the promo material because someone like Norman Reedus wants to pee on every fictional mountain, it is often from the actor’s voice and not their appearance. FMV games aren’t like that. In fact, they are a mostly forgotten style of game, often just a collection of scenes filmed much like anything you’ve seen David Cage produce but without the pretensions surrounding it. Sony and Flavourworks’ Erica is just one of those, but with an actress that keeps cropping up in places.

I’ll end up talking about Holly Earl (Erica) at least once more when she’s in Doctor Who, but in a glimpse over at TV to see Law & Order: UK was on the other day, I noticed she was in that too. Next, I’ll notice a bloke called Troy Baker in a game. Anyway, Erica is that FMV game revealed a while back (I think at E3) exclusively for the PS4 and that would later be released in 2019. Well, as the title would suggest, it is now shirking that shackle of being tied to the noisy black machine of death that likes shouting at me every time I start it up, and is moving to PC.

The thriller is among the revival mimicking that 90s phenomenon of segmented clips cut up while giving you decisions between them, i.e the FMV portion. However, unlike the rather camp nature of games like Night TrapErica is actively trying to be a bit of a thriller/horror thing. It is a focus that some found a bit humdrum and others found to be quite good back on its PS4 release. You follow the adventures of Erica Mason, as she explores a mansion that does the usual bumps and creaks in the dark. The young woman unwraps her childhood mental torment, with you interacting and deciding how things pan out for Erica.

Of course, the game did release on iOS back in January if you want to view it through a 10-inch screen at half an arm’s length away. However, starting from May the 25th, you’ll be able to play Erica on PC. The game is currently available to wishlist over on Steam as well. Upon release, it will be $12/£10 with a small discount of 10%. Personally, I am interested in the game. If not for the actual gameplay, i’m interested in it for the camera work and simple yet effective cinematography. The game’s soundtrack is provided by Austin Wintory, of Journey fame as well, if you are interested in that.
