It’s hard to say no to free games. Well, maybe if they’re free-to-play and pay-to-win, but you know what I mean. When it’s a revered indie or AAA title for the low, low price of $0, it’s a no-brainer to jump on it. As we’ve covered, PlayStation is doing just that with their Play At Home initiative, with 10 games being made free from March 25th until April 22nd, and you don’t even need to have a PlayStation Plus account to claim them!
The bevy of games on offer isn’t easy-to-peddle shovelware either. The titles include Abzu, Subnautica, Thumper, The Witness, Rez Infinite, Moss VR, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Enter the Gungeon, and Paper Beast. Spanning several genres, there’s a little something for everyone in this array of titles. With past experience on some of these, I’d like to steer you in the right direction of what to try first of these ten!
Enter the Gungeon is my easy frontrunner for the best of this batch. The Roguelike genre really picked up a lot of steam last year with the widespread acclaim for Hades, and I feel that Gungeon is going to be a fantastic entry point for anyone not acquainted with how the genre works. A tough-as-nails twin-stick shooter where every enemy is a bullet, Gungeon has so much replayability and staying power that hours can fly by without anyone noticing.
Also, don’t give up after your first death. The random generation of guns and abilities will ensure every playthrough is a different experience. This one is a must-download at the price of free!
Abzu is a short-but-sweet exploration title, with the main catch being its beauty, and what a looker it is. Discovering the depths and making your way through a gorgeous ocean alongside all sorts of nautical life, with a dialogue-free narrative that unfolds before your eyes, is what makes Abzu a memorable experience despite its brief playtime. Key moments will stick in your mind rent-free for a very long time. I have several that come to the forefront of my mind that I won’t spoil!
Rez Infinite is quite possibly the most peculiar of the group. Yet, in this case, weird is good as it makes for a kind of game you’ve likely never played. An “expanded version” of the early PS2 game Rez, Infinite is a cerebral attack on the senses, with unreal visuals, a rhythmic catharsis, and a true test of the reflexes. Running at a silky-smooth 60fps and broadcasting wireframe aesthetics that are nothing short of moving art, this is a freebie that doesn’t deserve passing up.
The three aforementioned games are my cream of the crop, but that doesn’t mean the rest aren’t worth trying. The Witness is a puzzler that would make any Myst fan proud. Subnautica has a passionate fanbase after its streaming success a few years back, and you’re especially lucky if you happen to own a PSVR set. What’s abundantly clear here is that we’re all winners when we get our hands on tons of free games!
