The tough part about the recent console generations is that things have increasingly relied on digital and online operations. Case in point: the PS3, PS Vita, and PSP are getting ready to shut their online stores for good. This doesn’t seem like a huge deal, especially if you rarely touch these older consoles on a regular basis. The problem for some fans is that this effectively kills the digital games stores for consoles that some still love and play to this day.
These three consoles alone have huge player bases. While some might not still play on these consoles, millions own them. The PS3 sold a total of 87 million units during its lifetime. Just below that is the PSP, which sold 81 million units. Before we know it, buying games from the PS Store on these consoles will not be an option. Surprisingly so, these shutdowns are coming sooner than one might think.
The PSP and PS3 stores are to be closed on July 2nd, with the Vita following behind on August 27th. All three consoles will still allow players to play their digital games. The problem is that physical copies of games on these consoles will continue to rise as the systems become more and more “retro.” If you’re a fan of these consoles, then make any purchases you might want to make before those deadlines. By then, you won’t have the option to do so.
