I have spent ridiculous hours playing the classic Bubble Bobble games over the years. Along with things like Tetris and Puzzle Fighter, I played a ton of puzzle games as a kid. Bubble Bobble 4 Friends was originally a console exclusive and is now coming to Steam, according to the developer, Taito.

The game will be releasing along with the “The Baron is Back” update, which adds even more content to the game. The developers released a trailer and also provided this information via the press release:

The Bubble Bobble series of games began in arcades in 1986, inviting players to control the bubble dragons, Bub and Bob, and complete the action-puzzle stages which comprised the game. Bubble Bobble 4 Friends is a brand new sequel in the series, featuring the classic bully bubbling and bursting action with new skills to use and 200 all-new stages to enjoy. Play alone or together with 3 other friends in local multiplayer. It even contains the original Bubble Bobble and online rankings so you can compete with the best in the world.

You can enjoy the game with up to four people in local multiplayer, and we’ve added compatibility for Steam controllers, PS4 controllers, and keyboard with customizable controls too. As the original Bubble Bobble requires two people playing to see the game’s true ending, two people can even share one keyboard!

We don’t have a firm release date yet for Bubble Bobble 4 Friends, but as someone with very fond memories of the series, I am excited. The idea of customizable controls is a great accessibility feature too, so hopefully, more people will be able to enjoy the bubble bursting gameplay themselves. As time goes on I’m sure Taito will release more information about the Steam version, including a release date, so stay tuned.
