Fairly recently, Square Enix has announced that they will be bringing the world of Final Fantasy VII to mobile devices. Not with any sort of ports, however, but in the form of two entirely new games set in the universe of Final Fantasy VII Remake. Many people were hoping for a port of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII or even Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, but I can understand why this is not happening. I’d like to elaborate further, but if you’ve played last year’s hit, you’ll understand why I won’t.

The first of two mobile games they’ve announced is Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier. This one to me seems like a really odd choice. Set in Midgar thirty years before the events of FFVII, this one is a Battle Royale game where you fight for survival as a SOLDIER candidate. It’s understandable for Square Enix to jump on the Battle Royale bandwagon, but making it a mobile game seems like it might not be the right choice for this kind of game. I’ve tried playing Fortnite on my smartphone before and it was anything but an enjoyable experience.

The gameplay of Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier actually looks quite fun though, with the ability to ride Chocobos and even using summons like Ifrit to your advantage. This game is scheduled to arrive on mobile devices sometime this year and is rumored to be free to play due to being in the Battle Royale genre.

Now, the other game they announced definitely excites me a lot more than the first. Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis is an episodic single-player experience said to cover the entirety of the Final Fantasy VII timeline, including the original game and the compilation titles.

The overall graphics of this game are definitely more retro-esque, while the visuals in battle are more reminiscent of the remake. Since this is a single-player experience and releases in episodes, it’s rumored that you’ll either be able to pay for all episodes in advance or buy them individually when they release. We’ll find out whether this rumor is true or not when the game comes out sometime next year.

I’m hoping that Square Enix will realize that these games would be perfect for Consoles and PC as well and rethink the choices they made with these games. I’d personally love to play either of them on my Nintendo Switch.

Hey there! I'm Aaron, 26 and from Germany. I mostly play games with a stronger emphasis on a good story, but occasionally can be found delving into a genre I'm not too accustomed to. Diversity and accessibility are important aspects in gaming for me as well, which are always important conversations to have for me personally.
