Monday, Alexx spoke about some 80s vomit via technicolor in a puzzle game, I was cropped out of shot from staring at anuses in Mass Effect‘s remasters, and Mike spoke about something that happened at a sports thing. Tuesday, I went on about Christmas coming digitally this June, and I later noted that the Cotswolds are not, in fact, a few minutes down the road from Edinburgh but both are coming to the PC. Wednesday, I spoke about my evil plot to rule the world via confectionery. Finally, on Thursday, Alexx spoke about a game he didn’t like (and was free last week) getting an expansion, and Taylor spoke about American Rounders.
It is another one of those weeks with the Epic Games Store where I don’t know if I want to jump in an oven or express any joy. Though that’s referencing next week, so let’s talk about this week: Halcyon 6 Starbase Commander, or as I like to call it, let’s make Star Trek boring. That’s a mighty strong feat to pull off, considering I’ve recently watched all of Star Trek: Discovery in less than a month. This is a greater problem with timing and games available via the Epic Games Store than the game’s quality. If your game is slow and ponderous, there is a good chance I’m just not going to enjoy it.
Halcyon 6, along with being a pain in my Uranus to spell (I’m just going to call it Fred from now on), crosses the genres of FLT‘s space themes, turn-based combat of XCOM, and feels very much like a classic RPG. Call me what you will, I’ve heard it all this week, but I believe if you are going to do something within a medium you need to understand why it is in that medium. While Romana/Fred does call itself a game, I don’t see why it needs to be one. Just so I can absentmindedly click buttons every now-and-then?
My point is, I don’t feel useful, and the reams and reams of text on every click just makes me want to stop and go read something I am actually interested in. It is very nice text, very long and thought out to be humorous. However, I am playing a game and I want to feel like I am playing a game. Maybe I am in the minority, but i despise being handheld for several minutes throughout the tutorial, getting very bored, and in the end having no clue what is going on because there is seemingly no line between important information or fluff text. Maybe it is fine if you give it the time and you are interested. That is two things I don’t have when doing these Epic Games Store articles.
All this week you can pick up Halcyon 6 Starbase Commander until next Thursday, the 18th of February. That is when it will be replaced by the game before Funselektor Labs made Art of Rally, Absolute Drift. Though that’s not the only game, instead next week I’ll be ignoring (for the most part) Bethesda and Avalanche Studios’ colorful and personality-less open world sandbox of Mad Max for people who think that’s a bit too much. Rage 2 will be free alongside a game all about doing what Nintendo Joy-cons do, drifting.
Quickly before you go, as the last bit of good housekeeping for the article. On a bit of a whim, David and I decided, for some videos that we produce over on the YouTube channel that use scripts, will now feature those scripts as the transcriptions. For now, we have them on a GRID (2019) video (linked below) and my Hitman 2 video, both using the very rough scripts that were shot in a teleprompter to record the voice over. For some, it makes no difference; The aim is to instead open the videos up the best we can and where we can to audiences that may have partial hearing or may be deaf altogether. For the time being, it is select videos for time-sensitive purposes.
