In recent years, movie adaptations of video games are proving to be strong contenders instead of instant flops. Instead of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and pretty much anything Uwe Boll got his hands on being big stinkers, we’ve gotten awesome flicks in the way of Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu. This includes lots of buzz for the upcoming HBO’s The Last of Us series and Uncharted recently. As such, it’s more exciting than ever to see games hit the silver screen.
Borderlands has stood the test of time for a decade, with three of the most chaotic FPS games I can think of. I especially enjoyed sinking dozens of hours into the recent Borderlands 3, so I’m at a fever pitch at the recent announcements for the casting of the movie, set to be directed by Eli Roth. A while ago, we heard of Lilith being portrayed by Cate Blanchett, which is a big name to be sure. In the past week or so, though, the announcements have been rapid-fire.
First off was Kevin Hart as Roland. The man gets cast in comedy films at a consistent rate and has the charisma necessary for the franchise. Then, Jamie Lee Curtis was announced as Dr. Patricia Tannis. Likeness notwithstanding, the fervent, quirky character makes the actress a shoe-in for the portrayal. Today, though, Jack Black was announced to voice Claptrap. This one made me do a double-take, and it feels like the most natural fit of all, as the zaniness is normal for Mr. Black.
There’s quite a lot of cast members to unveil still, as one wonders who else will get the spotlight for Borderlands. Who knows? We could see a mammoth of a man like The Rock or Jason Momoa fill the spot of Brick, or a comedy genius like Zach Galifianakis take up Marcus. It feels like the skies of Pandora are the limit for the rest of the casting with the likes of who have been cast at this point. Here’s hoping we catch Borderlands soon and it doesn’t end up in development limbo like so many movies of its kind!
