I love colorful Indie games. I think that independent developers are doing great work reviving classic genres and refreshing things for new audiences. As a result, I was excited to see news about Little Nemo and the Nightmare Fiends, a new adventure game by Pie for Breakfast Studios. They have released a trailer, along with the date for their upcoming Kickstarter campaign.
Here are all the details we know so far about the announcement: “Pie for Breakfast Studios, an award-winning game studio blending play with the arts, and independent studio PxlPlz have released a teaser trailer for their game Little Nemo and the Nightmare Fiends, and announced that a Kickstarter campaign to fund the game’s development will go live on March 2nd, 2021, seeking a funding goal of $70,000.
The campaign will offer rewards such as access to a community Discord server, copies of the game, digital and physical art books, soundtracks, posters, and other items. Higher tier rewards will include hand-painted animation cels, opportunities to beta-test the game, having your likeness put in the game, or working with the developers to add characters.
Little Nemo is inspired by Winsor McCay’s landmark 1905 comic strip, Little Nemo in Slumberland. Fans of non-linear platform games such as Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap and Monster World 4 will find a lot to love in Little Nemo!”

The press release also talks about the game itself, stating: “Little Nemo and the Nightmare Fiends, as in the 1905 comic strip, follows the adventures of a 7-year-old boy in the world of his dreams. Little Nemo and the Nightmare Fiends find Nemo and his friends fighting off the invasion of the Nightmare Fiends, who threaten the existence of Slumberland itself!
Players control Nemo and his 3 friends: the magic-wielding Princess of Slumberland, the mischievous clown Flip, and the agile royal guard Peony, an original character created for this game. Each character has different abilities that help them navigate the dangers in Slumberland. The game offers a system that lets players switch between characters quickly, allowing them to use different characters’ abilities in tandem for powerful combinations!
Never to be left out, Flip's spring-loaded boxing gloves can be used for mid-air grapples, letting him cross even the longest gaps!

Featuring hand-drawn, keyframed artwork and animation, Little Nemo and the Nightmare Fiends combines the exquisite art and wild dreams of the original comic with reimagined characters and new adventures. The game is currently in early prototype form and is tentatively slated to release in 2022.”
I am really excited to see what the development team does with Little Nemo. It kind of reminds me of a mix between The Lost Vikings and Metroidvania-style platformers. We’ve got a bit of time until we get more information but hopefully, people will rally behind this Kickstarter.
In Winsor McCay's comics, the Princess of Slumberland was usually a passive observer, but no more! Since #LittleNemo's last visit, she's learned to wield Slumberland's most powerful magic, such as this hover!https://t.co/yxsDxTeEUV #Kickstarter #screenshotsaturday #Indiedev pic.twitter.com/X7nu5Dsa3B
