33 years ago, Steve Purcell debuted his Sam & Max comic book franchise. This franchise has spawned all sorts of media since then, including the first episodic release by Telltale Games. Now the first entry in the Sam & Max Telltale series (Sam & Max Save the World) has been remastered by Skunkape. I didn’t play the original release, but spending time with Sam and Max on my Nintendo Switch has been a blast.
In Sam & Max Save the World Remastered, you play as the titular duo Sam (the dog) and Max (the rabbit) as they try to solve cases as freelance police. The game plays similarly to other Telltale releases and point-and-click titles. You walk around as Sam, talking to people and picking up items. You solve puzzles using various items and by talking to characters with either Sam or Max.
Some dialogue puzzles require good cop/bad cop techniques using both Sam and Max. Additionally, there are car chase sequences that make use of Sam’s pistol, though it may be used in other areas as well. Honestly, the gameplay isn’t the deepest or most-involved thing to explain, but the game makes up for it in spades.
How, you ask? Well, for starters the remastered visuals are incredibly well done. Every character is rendered well and there are no visual glitches or anything that might be considered poorly done. It is far better than some remastered editions I’ve seen. In addition, some of the puzzles have been simplified from the original version, taking out unnecessary steps in reaching certain conclusions.
Each episode of Sam & Max Save The World Remastered is a self-contained case, though they are related in sequential order. Playing one out of sequence won’t necessarily confuse you, but you will catch running gags and plot elements if you play them in order. The irreverent pop culture references are great and the voice acting is very well done.
On PC the remastered version of Sam & Max Save The World also includes widescreen and gamepad support. On all platforms, it has five new music tracks, enhanced graphics, and all the content of the original release. It is quite easily one of the best remasters that I have seen, and I really hope that Skunkape gives both of Sam and Max’s other adventures the remaster treatment as well.
The controls are solid and being able to take the Switch version on the go is fantastic. You can’t go wrong with Sam & Max Save The World Remastered. If you’re a returning player just wanting to play the new, enhanced version, or if you have never played them before, I encourage you to give this a try.
