I wrote some news this week, for a change. Monday, I wrote about Stick it to the Man joining Prime Gaming following its free period on Epic a while back, while Zoë wrote about Blizzard employees calling for a strike following the closure of the Versailles studio. Wednesday, I spoke about Mars Horizon blasting off in November. Thursday, I quickly noted how you can now play proper multiplayer (privately) in THPS 1 + 2. Meanwhile, Zoë spoke of EA’s Canadian loot box woes. Now for some more with the free games on the Epic Games Store.

This week it is a week of sequels: The Sequel, starring Layers of Fear 2 and Costume Quest 2. Let’s start with what bored me to death rather than scares me to death: Layers of Fear 2 is the Bloober Team game archetype number 1 of recent years. Following on from the footsteps set out by the first game in 2016, Layers of Fear 2 tripped and hit its head when it came to reviews for some. It is a fairly middle of the road horror experience for a few. With notable exceptions to the rule by a handful, many saw its predecessor to outshine the sequel.

Costume Quest 2 is the only one I had found interest in this week. It is the sequel to the fun and energetic turn-based game about kids on Halloween, Costume Quest. Well, it wasn’t going to be a sequel to anything else now would it? Bigger, grander, and with more fun costumes to dress up in, you’ll run through the short, fun, and charming Double-Fine sequel asking for more sugar than I put in my several cups of coffee a day. It is a fun RPG just in time for Halloween.

Both Costume Quest 2 and Layers of Fear 2 are both available all week on the Epic Games Store, ending on the 29th of October. For some, like those in the UK, there is a slight shift in time you’ll have to claim the games. Since March you’ve had until 4 PM, that will probably change to about 3 PM for a week. American (and others) changes their clocks on the first Sunday of November, and I assume that’s just to make the whole mess a bit more confusing.

Next week is another Bloober Team psychological horror as you play as a man suffering  from PTSD. However, you get to pet a dog in 2019’s Blair Witch, so it is all fine. In the other game you get to play with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hadson, as you specifically try not to cross your streams… or something like that. Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered did get a bit weird.

As it is Halloween soon, Epic is doing a Halloween themed sale on things like Dead Cells, Mortal Shell, Control, The Outer Worlds, Hades, Death Stranding, WRC 9, The Walking Dead and more. To check out the sale click here!
