Traditionally, television shows have released in one of two schedules. Either they release an episode per week, or all of them at once. The former builds suspense and makes the viewer wait a week for the answers to their questions, and the latter lets the viewer power through everything in one fell swoop if they so choose. Amazon Prime Video series The Boys decided to mix these two for the show’s second season, and fans are not pleased by this choice.

What The Boys decided to do was release the season’s first three episodes, then release the rest of the season weekly. So, while viewers could binge what is essentially the intro to the season, they then have to wait for the rest of the story to unfold. While the show received an incredible 98% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, it is being review-bombed by the audience on Amazon, culminating to a current 2.7 out of 5 stars.

The choice to release the show in this format is unprecedented, and may be a cause for concern for other shows wanting to emulate this schedule. Seeing as the majority of current shows end in cliffhangers (for the sake of binging,) it’s surely frustrating to invest 3 hours into a show (longer than a movie’s length) only for a week-long wait to greet them at the end. It also hurts that season one had all of its episodes readily available upon release, so the change is jarring.

For what it’s worth, The Boys‘ season two start is gripping and enjoyable. While I fall in the category of those who would rather binge the season, I can suck it up and enjoy the show in small doses each week, and wouldn’t go out of my way to leave a negative review on a show I’m enjoying solely based on how it releases. Here’s hoping season two finishes strong, as the new character Stormfront is captivating and really starting to get the spotlight.
