Not much to say about this week’s news really. Monday, I covered the mobile guff of Twitch Prime, and the latest games added to that. Tuesday, Taylor spoke of the PS4 controller working partially for the PS5, and I moaned about Strauss Zelnick trying to justify a price hike of games, in an economic downturn, in the middle of the pandemic. Thursday, I got that feeling again as another Souls-like is set for release. Meanwhile, Alexx got a similar feeling as Pikmin 3 Delux was announced. Though, it is now Friday morning, so that means it is time to talk about the Epic Games Store and the free game for this week.
This week it is the endlessly wonderful and charming Wilmot’s Warehouse. If you don’t know of the game already, you are a fictional Amazon employee in a warehouse full of the usual rubbish: Exercise bikes, computers, sex toys, and all. You have a set time to collect all the items the people at the front desk ask for, which sounds easy.
It is just a time trial right? Wrong, you are navigating the labyrinthine-like maze of useless toot, all while trying to drag twelve bananas through a one-block wide gap. All this while you’re still on the clock and you have to remember where you put everything, which doesn’t work because your organization is throwing everything in a corner and leaving it.
At the end of the day, you get a restock of items to bring to the front desk, and finding a place for that is an impossible task. I’ve never sworn over a magnet before, but I couldn’t find one for miles of searching and searching. Turns out, they were all down by the bins for some reason.
That is what I love about Wilmot’s Warehouse, it is the blend of that “Casual game” that you play while waiting for or on a bus, but it brings just as much difficulty as any other game because it is not based on skill, instead of memory and the quickness to process that.
Anyone could play Wilmot’s Warehouse, three people of different preferences in their game difficulty, and all will come away with about the same experience. Though unlike the Amazon working experience, you can take a break, the time restrictions aren’t always as harsh, and in general, it is a much safer work environment. I don’t think the PC or a home console is the best place to play Wilmot’s Warehouse, however, as it is the type of game you’d play while half interested in a TV show. The Switch is the perfect place to play, again because of its ability to go handheld.
Though that was not the only game made available throughout this week and the reason I’m not going to write extensively about it is that it isn’t just for this week. 3 Out of 10 Ep 1 “Welcome to the Shovelworks” is an episodic adventure comedy about a developer plagued by terrible scores for their terrible games, so it is a documentary about shovelware publisher Sometimes You. According to the game’s description, you’ll be able to pick up episodes 1-5 for free on weekly release this, of course, being the first.
Wilmot’s Warehouse and 3 out of 10 Ep 1 “Welcome to the Shovelworks” are available all week until August 13th. Next week, Remnant: From the Ashes, a Souls-like with co-op and guns and The Alto Collection, which looks to be another “Keep moving right as we tell a vague emotionless story about emotions.” One would also assume the second episode of 3 out of 10 will also be available as well. Along with this, Sludge Life is still available for free on the storefront. As is the small adventure DLC of Delores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-adventure, something to add to Thimbleweed Park, which was available several weeks ago.
