If you’ve waited for the day for a new Splinter Cell game, Ubisoft and Netflix are partnering for an animated series adapting the Splinter Cell video game franchise. Derek Kolstad, the writer behind the John Wick movies, will write and executive produce the series. It is not a brand new game, but it is better than nothing. With a decent amount of episodes ordered, we know Netflix is putting some serious resources into the project.
The show is set to begin with two seasons of 8 episodes each. As if John Wick wasn’t a great credential, Derek Kolstad has his hands on multiple projects that are hot right now. He worked on Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as well as Quibi’s Kevin Hart show, entitled Die Hart. This isn’t Kolstad’s first gaming project either for film or TV. He is set to work on the Just Cause film that is still early in development.
The game series stars special operative Sam Fisher as he navigates the world of terrorism and crime for the American government. The series almost had a movie deal penned with Tom Hardy as the star, but it turns out the project didn’t have the legs many of us hoped. After that project failed, I worried the entire Splinter Cell series might be dead in the water. After all, we haven’t had a new game in years.
The last release, 2013’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist, feels like forever ago. We need more Sam Fisher in our lives, and even if it’s just the Netflix show for now, I’ll take it.
