AEW is on a tear for it being less than a year since its debut. AEW Dynamite really pushes wrestling to be more of a competitive industry rather than WWE running rampant. Now, a referee for the AEW who has experience in game development is confirming that an AEW game is being worked on as we speak…or type, in this case.

On Chris Jerico’s Podcast, Referee Aubrey Edwards gave us some insight into what’s happening with the title:

“We’re very very early on. There’s a lot of things that we’re talking about. I talk to Kenny [Omega] a lot about what he wants out of it. It’s definitely a ways out, I’m not going to put a number on it because I don’t want the internet to get mad at me.”

The game will likely still be a year or two away from release but this could be huge for AEW. With the WWE 2K games postponed, this could make for a great introduction to casual wrestling fans and gamers unaware of the AEW product. Edwards also noted that a create-a-character would be essential to the game, as many wrestling titles feature a robust creation studio.

While we don’t know what an AEW game would look like, there is a ton of room for an opportunity here. The wrestling games of the Nintendo 64 era really helped grow the brand of the WWF and WCW. There are a lot of people who gravitated away from wrestling after the mid-2000s and might want back in. Where the WWE flounders its use of narrative and well-known characters, AEW is on a hot streak with fans new and old.

Having spent 10 years in game development before her job at AEW, Edwards is a point-woman for the project. While there’s no date for release, it’s nice to know we might have a good wrestling game on the way.
