Well, this is going to be a sell and a half, innit? Monday, I covered the latest additions to Twitch Prime for May, and Taylor covered the sales figures for Animal Crossing. Tuesday, David spoke of the Steam Summer Sale dates leaking, and he also spoke of Civ VI‘s upcoming Season Pass. Wednesday, I exploded as Activision said they were remastering Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2, while Mike spoke about a Greek band’s latest music video. Thursday, Taylor spoke about some gaming deals to stave off boredom. Right, I think it is time to sell you something you already own three copies of on two different systems, and is the best-selling piece of entertainment ever.
With these weekly Epic Games Store articles, I only give myself a maximum of about two hours to either refresh myself on a game or learn it completely. The problem with Grand Theft Auto V is that I’ve played it entirely. Several times in fact and twice on the weekend, to the point that I could quote several lines as scenes play out. I said it in the article about my Dyslexia and gaming habits, Grand Theft Auto is one of the series that captured my imagination. San Andreas was a game I was still playing daily several years after its release, and Grand Theft Auto V is no different. Though admittedly, even though I have more to play now as an adult, I still go back.
The soundtracks for the games also had an impact on me, with Vice City exposing me to the 80s pop and rock of Michael Jackson, Quiet Riot, Kate Bush, Mötley Crüe, Rick James, and Iron Maiden. San Andreas gave me Heart, the Ohio Players, Rod Steward, Grand Funk Railroad, Eddie Money, Willie Nelson, Slick Rick, Public Enemy, and much more including a love of satirical talk show radio. If it wasn’t for this series, we wouldn’t have Saints Row 2 with The Mix 107.77 FM, featuring a great soundtrack and gameplay of running over college students and old people as you swerve to hit them while singing: “Do you come from a land down under!”
Back to Grand Theft Auto V. No the soundtrack isn’t the strongest on consoles, even with Robbie Williams on the pop station. Though on PC you can import your own California highway soundtrack, that’s not what’s important. Between the major releases in the series (that were good and not IV), there are more than quality-of-life improvements made, including being able to climb on thin things without committing Harakiri on what’s below. With a map that is a work of art, a story that finally understands pacing, and a collection of tools to make gameplay fun, there is a reason it sold like cookies next to the weed dispensary.
You can pick up Grand Theft Auto V on the Epic Games Store for free until May 21st, at 8 AM PDT/ 11 AM EDT. However, unlike most weeks with a game that has a rating unsuitable for younger players, Epic isn’t offering anything else for them this week. We aren’t even being told anything about next week’s game. It is a mystery, just like this week’s game was. Amusingly, this ultimately led to their entire site breaking as hundreds (hundreds of thousands) tried to claim Grand Theft Auto V for free. With this major free deal comes the Epic MEGA sale, with up to 75% off. Satisfactory is 10% off while Control is 50% off right now, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is 70% off.
However, for those who aren’t 18+ or can’t lie convincingly enough, you can pick up Aegis Defenders free on Humble Bundle until the 17th of May. The indie tower-defense RPG published by Humble themselves is something I’ve been meaning to pick up recently anyway, as the art-style is something that has interested me for a while. I (and you) may even have it already on Twitch Prime from last June. You have until 10 AM PDT on the 17th of May to pick this one up if are interested in adding this RPG to your Steam library.
