Warning Full Spoilers for the Episode “Victory and Death” are below
May 4th marked a big day for Star Wars fans. The fan-dubbed holiday brought us news for Jedi Fallen Order DLC, a “making of The Mandalorian” video series, and above all, The Clone Wars series finale “Victory and Death”. The finale of course, was light on story but heavy on emotional interactions between Rex, Ahsoka and their fellow clone troopers. It was also full of action-oriented scenes. Everything in the final episode just worked and worked well.
Things are looking grim for Ahsoka and Rex as they are trapped in the medical bay with the clones closing in on them. Ahsoka does not want to kill any of them as they are basically under mind control with the inhibitor chips. She tell Rex to set his blasters to stun to try and make the cleanest getaway as possible, but of course Maul causes a major problem. He was broken out by Ahsoka in the last episode, to cause a distraction and did just that. He nearly dooms our heroes.
Now since “Victory and Death” was so action-heavy it is a little hard to talk about the story which was really completed with last weeks episode “Shattered”. Here we were able to see the character arcs get wrapped up, from Ahsoka and Rex to even Darth Maul’s storyline. The small cast put on display here was excellent and made sense in the larger Star Wars universe.
This could very well be the most cinematic episode in Star Wars history. Watching Maul walk in to destroy the hyperdrive and send the republic cruiser crashing down to a nearby planet was awesome. That, along with the stand off with a hundred clone troopers, and Ahsoka’s free fall while Rex tries to catch her in a small ship just made it better. Everything just felt so epic and final. I think this was the perfect send-off for The Clone Wars.
The final shot of the show is what really cemented “Victory and Death” as the final episode for me. We got to see Darth Vader visit Ahsoka’s false grave, and got that last shot of Vader walking away in the reflection of a Clone’s helmet. It just made everything feel so final.
I believe that these last few episodes of The Clone Wars are the best example of how a prequel story should be told. Thanks to Star Wars: Rebels and the novel Ahsoka we’ve known for years that they faked their deaths and hid from the empire. We also know that both Rex and Ahsoka go on to aid the rebels after the events of A New Hope. Even knowing that though, I was on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next and that is probably one of the biggest compliments I can give any prequel story.
