A fun twist to a fighting game can make or break a new release. In the beat-em-up genre, the rules are simple. Run around, beat enemies up with fun attacks and combos, and have a good time. Music and visuals usually help, but the gameplay rules all in beat-em-up titles. In Megabyte Punch, gameplay and all those extra things are executed incredibly well for a title that might surprise a lot of people willing to give it a go.
What is Megabyte Punch?
Megabyte Punch is a new addition to the Nintendo Switch library, but the game released in 2013 on PC via Steam. The game is a standard beat-em-up, but with a twist. You actually take your character, a robot of sorts, and build their powers and attacks based on your defeated enemies. As you take on other robot enemies, you can pick up their special parts to put together your ultimate fighter. Once you run through and create your best fighter imaginable, you can take on others in a battle arena.
The fun element to Megabyte Punch that surprised me was the art of crafting your fighter. There’s a deep system of combinations and adjustments you can make that might seem great. Then you get to the arena and you’re faced with all the downsides to your build. That means its time to go back and build again. The process of finding what fighter works best for you is a ton of fun and gives the player a lot of freedom to be creative.
Is Megabyte Punch Worth Buying?
I think a lot of people might worry themselves over what sort of depth you can get from Megabyte Punch. I’ll be honest, the combo of beat-em-up combat and platforming is going to turn off some people who don’t appreciate the rudimentary stylings of either genre. In my opinion, that’s a misstep, because both are done incredibly well in Megabyte Punch. The game features great visuals and music, but the platforming mechanism to lead you to new enemies who you use to improve your character is genius. The experience is a ton of fun, and there’s not a single thing I think the game could improve upon.
Yes, this game won’t be for everyone. There are some people who tire of these sorts of games. I think that given the game’s simplicity, it’s easy to wonder if there’s going to be a point where things get boring. I’m here to tell you that this isn’t the case. The game is well done, looks great, and is a total blast. If you have an interest in this game at all, give it a go. I don’t think you’ll regret it one bit.
