Warning Full Spoilers for the Episode “Shattered” Below
Lately, I find myself waking up in the early hours of the morning every Friday in anticipation for the newest episode to one of my favorite shows of all time. Yes this season has been a little uneven and a few episodes were lackluster to say the least, however, this final arc of The Clone Wars continues to keep me on the edge of my seat. With this week’s episode “Shattered”, we not only got a more somber and slower-paced episode but a more intense one too. In fact, it was so intense that I was gripping my mug of tea so hard my knuckles were turning white.
”Shattered” is the third part to the four-part epic that is “The Siege Of Mandalore” arc which makes up the final episodes of The Clone Wars. The story picks up right where “Phantom Apprentice” left off. Maul has been captured and Mandalore has been liberated by a joint effort of the Republic army and the Mandalorians lead by Bo-Katan. Ahsoka is now tasked with making her way to Coruscant with the prisoner in custody, in order to deliver him to the Jedi Council.
The somber tone starts up immediately as the episode begins. We are greeted with a slow melody that just oozes dread, sadness and anxiety for our lead characters as we wait for Order 66 to be activated and for the Clones to turn on their Jedi brethren. This creates an atmosphere of tension and uncertainty, even if we know that Ahsoka and Captain Rex both fake there deaths and escape Order 66.
The time winding down to the climax is one that I loved. We see Ahsoka have a nice heart to heart with her long time friend Rex and praise the clones as a whole, showing just how much she and the audience have come to love them. The clones aren’t just cannon fodder like the stormtroopers. The Clone Wars have portrayed them as people who have different ideals and morals. “The Bad Batch” showed this off beautifully with the bad batch crew.
The last three episodes so far have been all been paced so well. Every second seemed to be utilized well so that there wasn’t a dull moment, even in the slower portions of the episodes. “Shattered” is all set on a Republic cruiser and this setting forces the show to slow down to anticipate the inevitable chaos.
Adding to that chaos was how Ahsoka decided to use Maul as a distraction to escape from the pursuing Clone Troopers. Maul is a force to be reckoned with and had a hall way scene worthy of the big screen. Seeing Maul force himself through the halls of the ship using nothing but the force gave me a feeling of fear and intimidation that I haven’t felt since the hallway scene in Rouge One.
”Shattered” may not have been as exciting as last week’s episode, but I definitely felt a little more sadness from it. The sadness was due to the fact that not only did we see Rex kill his brothers, but also we saw how betrayed Ahsoka felt during the purge. It is safe to say that I am more than ready for the final episode.
