As if I needed another reason to nominate NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat 11 as my personal 2019 Game of the Year after the fact, it would seem the venerable fighting game developer has delivered even more. You see, it was announced early yesterday morning that the newest game in the gloriously-gory series of games will be getting new DLC later this month. This DLC, entitled Aftermath, expands upon the tale told in the game’s original story mode and adds several fan-favorite features that are new to MK11.
For the sake of those of you who haven’t yet finished MK11, I’ll avoid spoiling anything about its story mode or the details revealed in Aftermath’s teaser trailer which springboard from the story’s original ending. However, that restriction means that all I can tell you is the DLC will apparently entail Raiden and Liu Kang working alongside Shang Tsung for the greater good of history itself. Of course, I can’t speak for you, dear reader, but that prospect sounds to me like it will make for quite an interesting story expansion.
Aftermath will release on Tuesday, May 26th, 2020. At the time of this writing, there’s been no word as to how much the expansion will cost. Even so, I can tell you that new stages and two other long-awaited fan-favorite features, namely Stage Fatalities and Friendships, will be added to the game on that same date as a free update for all players. This means you get the update regardless of whether or not you own the Aftermath DLC.
Additionally, if you’ve been holding out for more guest fighters to be added to the game’s roster in future DLC aside from the initial “Kombat Pack,” you’re in luck. This is a NetherRealm game, after all; that studio has a long-standing tendency to include several guest “kombatants” in each game it releases, and MK11 is no exception. The one and only RoboCop will become playable at launch for everyone who purchases the Aftermath DLC.
Even if you’re not interested in any guest fighters, or if you’re happy with the six additional characters that were added in the Kombat Pack, two more Mortal Kombat staple fighters will be added within the Aftermath DLC. These two characters, Fujin and Sheeva, reportedly play significant roles within the story expansion as well.
As I often do, I’d like to leave today’s final word to you, dear reader. I’m absolutely excited for this new DLC and the series’ first story expansion. What do you think about everything that’s been revealed regarding Aftermath so far? Are you looking forward to its slated release date, or are you still just holding out for a second Kombat Pack? Do feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
