If you’re a fan of Modern Warfare, then you probably noticed a lot more people online this weekend. That’s because PC, PS4, and Xbox One offered a free weekend for MW multiplayer. With those players gone now unless they purchased the game after a great experience there’s only one question left. What’s coming up in the near future? PS4 and Xbox One players are going to see a major data update coming this week. What does that actually mean in terms of gameplay? Let’s talk about why these data updates occur in major multiplayer-based games.

What is a Data Update in Gaming?

To be honest, there’s never going to be a cut and dry definition of a data update. Every game is a little different. For example, patch notes that detail data updates usually point to what change is occurring. In fact, titles like Animal Crossing and even Modern Warfare often release details of the update. With this week’s 15GB data update coming, there are clear notes in the Infinity Ward blog that say the update is currently unlisted. In those cases, it usually means that the update is bug-related and heavy on behind-the-scenes tweaks.

It’s certain that most players might not notice any huge change with those data updates. A few minor inconveniences might disappear, which is nice. Still, patch notes help to explain what is actually occurring. Another update for Modern Warfare this week will bring those sorts of changes.

Shoot the Ship 24/7, now with Cranked and Grind in the mix, is coming to multiplayer. Likewise, new Gunfight variations should help keep online play fresh. Infinity Ward also noted that Obsidian camo and other fun items to chase are going to start showing up. Things like blueprint weapon attachments and more visuals are also going to be introduced this week. For more info, the Infinity Ward blog is a helpful place to check on changes.
