Animal Crossing: New Horizons has switched things up from past games by being a bit of a live service game, with new things and events being introduced as our real-time advances. Now, the last update wasn’t exactly the greatest with its controversial Bunny Day event, but the latest update has a bunch of new, better stuff to look forward to.
From April 23rd to May 4th in-game, players can participate in Tom Nook’s Nature Day promotion. Players will now get special Nook Mile challenges dedicated to planting greenery and foliage that nets players with a lot of Nook Miles. Coinciding with this event is the re-introduction of Leif, an NPC from New Leaf that specializes in selling plants. He is back as a regular plaza visitor, selling unique plants like shrubs that were previously unattainable. His plant life diversity and the Nature Day promotion will surely encourage players to spruce up their island some more.
However, there is another new NPC lurking around the place. Crazy Redd, the shady traveling merchant, is back and now selling things in a not-at-all suspicious boat. Among his wares, you can purchase works of art to donate or decorate with. However, if you’re looking to donate works of art, you have to be careful of buying counterfeits which will not be accepted. Thankfully, New Horizons keeps the New Leaf improvements of giving artwork visual tells to differentiate counterfeits from the real deal; so if you got some pictures in hand or if you’re an art buff, you can get some fresh new art easily.
To accommodate the reintroduction of artworks, the museum is gaining a new wing to show off the stuff you successfully donate. Speaking of the museum, the game is celebrating International Museum Day from May 18th to May 31st. The in-game museum has gained a lot of appreciation, and in fact, real-life museums are hosting digital tours through it. The International Museum Day further encourages digging into the museum through a stamp rally, where visiting museum exhibits net players stamps that can be traded in for a special in-game item.
Before the International Museum Day event, though, players can settle into the May Day event, running from May 1st to May 7th. Players will receive a special one-time ticket to a unique mystery island, which is a huge hedge maze. Said maze features a special guest appearance from Rover, a recurring NPC that’s been conspicuously absent from this game until now.
Rover, Leif, and Redd aren’t the only NPCs that are back. Throughout the entirety of June, players can drop by on Harvey’s photoshoot island to meet up with Reese and Cyrus, the NPCs that ran Re-Tail in New Leaf. They want you to do an anniversary photoshoot for them, and as a reward, they’ll give you all the wedding-themed objects used in the shoot for your own purposes. So, players can have some fun dressing up themselves and their villagers for their own joke weddings.
There are also a bunch of minor fixes and additions. You can get the nice aloha shirts that Isabelle and the Nooks wear through the Nook Miles shop, the interest rate on stored bells is lowered, etc. In general, it’s all stuff that will help keep the game fresh and I welcome the update.
