Out of nowhere, Nintendo surprised everyone with an announcement video for what will reportedly be Super Mario Maker 2‘s final major update. With that in mind, the major updates are going out with a bang.
The video starts with introducing new major power-ups. In a way, Nintendo has granted my wish of giving a Super Mario Bros 2. style in the form of a power-up that changes your character’s mechanics to those found in Super Mario Bros 2. Enemies are no longer downed by jumping on them, but you can now pick them up to use as projectiles. However, much like the Link power-up in the last major update, it’s only available in the first Super Mario Bros. style.
In general, a bunch of themes got unique power-ups. The Frog Suit is exclusively back for the Super Mario Bros 3. style, giving the ability to make water levels more enjoyable by making swimming user-friendly, along with a new ability to run on the surface of water. Super Mario World reintroduces the Power Balloon ability, but unlike the base game, you can fly in any direction with smooth control, like a more finely-tuned Koopa Clown Car. The New Super Mario Bros style also brings back the Super Acorn power-up and the Boomerang Flower has been adapted into the 2D space in the 3D World style.
In fact, the 3D World style got a bunch of new stuff in the form of wearable items. You get a wearable cannon box that lets players shoot projectiles straight ahead, along with a wearable POW Block that can be used three times. A Propeller Box allows players wearing it to propel upward three times in a row, while a Bullet Bill Mask can propel players horizontally. An interesting addition is the Goomba Mask, which makes all enemies ignore players as long as they’re wearing it. I could easily see it being used for some good stealth-like levels.
Anyway, are you sick of boss battles in the game just being Bowser, Bowser Jr, Boom Boom and Pom Pom? Well, that’s finally been addressed with the addition of the Koopalings, available in all styles. They will provide much needed variety as boss fight material. This is especially effective due to some of them having different mechanics; like Lemmy throwing bouncing balls everywhere. Unfortunately, they’re not available in 3D World style, so you’re still gonna be stuck with Meowsers.
They’re not the only enemies to be making a return, however. Along with the Super Mario Bros 2. mechanics, Phanto makes a return, chasing down players that pick up a Cursed Key. Mechakoopas also make a return, along with two new varieties. Red Mechakoopas can shoot homing missiles, while blue ones can generate huge laser beams. These fellas can also fly if placed in a night level, creating the flying mecha terrors this game desperately needed. Though, none of these guys show up in the 3D World style either. 3D World gets on-off trampoline blocks, which isn’t very exciting.
Now for the main event: World Maker. In World Maker, you can create a world map along the likes of Super Mario Bros 3/World and you can place any of the levels you create down on the map. Through this, players essentially get the level playlists they’ve been asking for, with the World Maker acting as a framing device to shove levels into a cohesive whole. Through World Maker, players can create eight worlds and forty levels, essentially giving the ability to create a large playlist of levels that can rival any official Mario game.
The World Maker update comes out on April 22nd. If this is going to be Mario Maker 2’s last major update, they at least ended things off with some pretty big additions.
