One of my favorite games from 2019 is coming to a new console. Inspired by Bioshock and space exploration games, Void Bastards is on its way to the Nintendo Switch for portable space-station crawling.
Void Bastards turns first-person shooters on its head and sort of makes you rethink how you run and gun. In fact, you don’t really run and gun at all. When you play this game, you immediately receive the task to lead a group called the Void Bastards through different space stations. The best part? All the space stations are randomly generated. You could play this game for 100 hours straight and never come across the same layout twice.
That sort of versatility makes this one of the more unique experiences in first-person shooters. Many games in the genre are very reliant on holding your hand through how to play. A lot of story modes in games like Battlefield and Call of Duty feel orchestrated. In Void Bastards, there’s no sense of comfort in what’s to come. You constantly find yourself facing uncertainty. You can go ahead and sneak around enemies, face them head-on, or go into it with some strategy. At the end of the day, it’s up to you.
There are a lot of Switch ports that diehard fans tell you to go play. In this case, I’ll be the one to tell you to pick up Void Bastards. You can read my Void Bastards review here, but here’s the gist. There are good rogue-like games and good shooters, and this is both. You can play this game to your ideal play-style, allowing it to be as good as you are at these sorts of titles. With insane enemies and no limits to what you can experience, the May 7th release date for Void Bastards on Switch can’t come soon enough.
