Warning Full Spoilers for the Episode “Together Again” Below
Star Wars The Clone Wars was in a bad spot last week with its weakest episode to date. In fact, it was what I believed to be some of the worst Star Wars content in the new canon thus far. However the final arc in “Ahsoka’s Walk About” finally concluded and it more than made up for last week’s shortcomings.
”Together Again” finally makes the wise decision to put both Trace and Rafa where they belong; off to the side on their own little adventure to find more spice to give to the Pike syndicate. This lets the story focus on Ahsoka escaping the prison and rigging the spice plant to explode, but in the process she stumbles across Darth Maul and hears a plot about Mandalore.
Meanwhile Trace and Rafa have finally become slightly bearable characters now that the spotlight isn’t entirely on them. Rafa learns to work with her sister instead of sheltering her, as they go back to Kessel to steal spice. This lead to a few of the episode’s more light-hearted moments that made me care a little more about the Martez sisters. They also weren’t frustrating like they were previously, which baffles me because this level of quality writing has been missing since the arc began.
For the final episode in the arc, “Together Again” was pretty light on story as most of the episode’s run-time was spent building up to the final arc of the show. That is something that I find slows the show down in a weird way. For a final season of twelve episodes, having four of those episodes be filler brings to light an entirely different problem, one that Star Wars has been struggling for years. What is the overall plan?
This is a show that has been mapped out for years, including the fact that the final season was story-boarded for a few episodes before production. For instance the entire “Bad Batch” arc was developed for a seventh season back in 2015 and “The Siege of Mandalore” was always meant to be the final arc of the show. That just begs the question as to why “Ahsoka’s Walk About” was even included to begin with.
Now that the arc is complete it was disappointing to see very little of Ahsoka dealing with leaving the Jedi Order, instead spending more of her time trying to hold to the Jedi way as she attempts to protect Trace and Rafa. I would have preferred to see a more torn Ahsoka that is now just learning how little the Jedi can do across the vast galaxy, instead of her trying to protect to naive sisters.
Now as an arc I think “Ahsoka’s Walk About” failed spectacularly. That is mostly due to shelving the main story and not building off any of the groundwork that was laid out in the fifth season. As an episode, “Together Again” brought back the excitement that has been missing from the show for the last three or four episodes. Seeing Bo-Katan meet with Ahsoka, recruiting her to fight for the freedom of Mandalore and knowing that she will have to face off against a more dangerous Darth Maul makes me shake in anticipation for the final episodes.
