Warning Full Spoilers for the Episode “Dangerous Debt” Below

I have been trying my hardest to love The Clone Wars again after the promising build up last week, but I have to say that ”Dangerous Debt” could very well be the worse episode in the entire series. Actually scratch that statement. This arc, known as “Ahsoka’s Walk About” is at the bottom of the barrel of Star Wars content. “Dangerous Debt” suffers from poor pacing, uneven character development, downright bad and annoying characters, plus a story that didn’t go anywhere and existed only to set up the upcoming “Siege of Mandolore” arc that will act as the series finale.

Dangerous Debt” picks up right where last week’s “Deal No Deal” left off, the Pike syndicate have captured Ahsoka and company, who are awaiting to be tortured and killed after they reveal the location of the lost spice shipment. Unfortunately, the ignorant side characters start annoying the audience right away as Rafa badgers and hounds Ahsoka one minute to think of a plan, only to scream about how her plan won’t work shortly thereafter.

It really was quite frustrating to watch Rafa interact with the other two characters. For a girl who is supposed to be street smart and hardened she comes off more as ignorant and straight up selfish, instead of being caring and concerned for her sister. Rafa’s actions wind up leading into danger as she is so worried about herself that she would rather put Ahsoka and Trace in harms way rather than to listen to reason.

Last week I mentioned that I thought Trace was just a little naive due to being sheltered by her sister. However this episode changed my mind and made me realize that Trace (like her sister) is just stupid. She needlessly risks her life to escape the Pikes and when she does run into Rafa and Ahsoka, she goes straight into fighting with her sister and ignoring guidance from Ahsoka.

Dangerous Debt” just felt wholly unnecessary. Once the trio escape the prison they are constantly running around the planet to find Trace’s ship “The Silver Angel” because she refuses to fly anything else. This stubbornness just leads to the episode ending with the girls in the same prison cell once again. The only progress to the story that this episode adds is Bo-Katan and Ursa Wren, two Mandalorians who seem to play a vital role in the final arc of The Clone Wars.

I loved the connections to Rebels and wasn’t expecting the connections to the “Zero’s Escape” arc where the Jedi’s actions directly effect the story of this episode. In fact, this explains why the Martez sisters have a great disdain for the Jedi as their parents were killed in an explosion and in the aftermath Jedi Luminara Unduli consoled them with a cold uncaring “The Force will be with you” line. Afterward she just left the girls to fight their way through life. It was a poor way to try and tug at the audience’s heartstrings.

There really wasn’t much to enjoy in this weeks episode, except for the cool character appearances, the beautiful animation and the fact that watching Ahsoka on screen is always a treat. Sadly, “Dangerous Debt” could not be saved due to its poor characters, bad story telling and just frustrating Martez sisters.
