Several months ago, we reported that some patents had been filled in the name of the Mafia series. Either for a sequel or possible remaster, as that’s all this generation of consoles seems to be done at the bitter end of its lifespan. Now we may have a better idea of what that patent was filled for, as a Korean rating board has been a little loose-lipped according to one.
According to Sal Romano of Gematsu, a “Mafia II: Definitive Edition” has been rated alongside SNK Gals Fighters for the Nintendo Switch. There is currently no word on the platforms this Mafia II remaster is heading to; However, one would assume it would at the very least make a release on the PS4 and Xbox One. Though given the Nintendo Switch can run The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, DOOM (2016) to an extent, and The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, it wouldn’t be out of the question for Mafia II to at least run on the platform.
Given 2K had a large enough spot on the most recent Nintendo Direct, I wouldn’t say that puts it out of the question either. The question one has to ask is: Why a Definitive Edition? I’m speaking purely on my own experience here, but the game doesn’t outright benefit from DLC as it is a semi-open world with missions limiting your time in the world. The DLC, from all second-hand accounts, seems to put other main characters in your hands with little impact on the plot or adding to it. Undoubtedly this, like many other definitive editions, will come with all the DLC and updated graphics for the almost ten-year gap between release and re-release.
The other game rated, SNK Gals’ Fighters, first release in the year 2000 for the Neo Geo Pocket Color. As the name would imply, you play as several female characters of the publisher’s games including Art of Fighting 2, Fatal Fury 2, and Samurai Shodown.
