The world is feeling a bit upside down right now, and no one can blame you for feeling a bit flat yourself. Everything from E3, WrestleMania, and GameStop, is closing up shop for a while. One thing we haven’t covered in the past month has been the cancellation of GDC. The Game Developer Conference was meant to take place between the 16th and 20th of March. At the end of February, many partners had pulled out, and organizers later pulled the event altogether, after flights and hotels were booked up. By about the 16th, the host city this year, San Francisco, had enacted a “shelter in place” order anyway.
Parts of the conference went ahead anyway, as the organizers quickly put together an online version of the awards. This didn’t fix the very present issue of developers, especially those of the indie variety, shelling out hundreds and possibly thousands of dollars on flights, hotel rooms, and some presentation. It sounds small, but business cards and booth presentations might not be refunded as easily as flights may, with heavy fees following. So currently there is a stream over on Twitch.tv by GameDev.world, a charity fundraiser looking to help those that most need it following the cancellation of the event.
“With the news of GDC’s official cancellation, many marginalized developers are facing the reality that they’ve invested what sometimes comes down to years of savings into an event that will no longer happen,” the group state on their website. Going on to say, “Many [of them] worry that they did not just lose the opportunity of attending this years’ conference, but also the possibility to re-route the funds spent to other opportunities throughout the year.” Starting on Monday the 30th through Wednesday the 1st of April, the livestream has quite a few notable guests.
Some of the speakers during the livestream includes, to name a few, Erin Yvette of The Walking Dead and Oxenfree; Jukio Kallio, composer for Minit, Nuclear Throne, and more; Ashly Burch of Hey Ash fame and a lot of games, and Rami Ismail, one half of developer Vlambeer. Yesterday’s stream included a Q&A with Darren Korb, composer over at Supergiant games, and Jukio Kallio playing some live music. However, you’re more interested in the games spoken about in the title, I know you.
In a brief offer, you can pay what you want over on Itch.io for 167 games including, Stellar Commanders, Airheart, Nuclear Throne, The Story Goes On, Totem, and of course, lots more. If you pay $10 or above you’ll get the games that are marked with keys for Steam or otherwise, however, $10 for 167 games is nothing to sneeze at. You can donate as much or as little as you want, but the bundle is only available until the 3rd of April.
