It is always a rush for me when musicians reach out and want to hear my thoughts on their work. League MVP‘s guitarist/vocalist Julian LaFace did just this a few weeks ago, ahead of their newest single, “Sorry Not Sorry.” The band released a few singles in 2019, but are set to shift their focus into the band in 2020. After listening to this new song, I can see why they want to put their all into this effort.
“Sorry Not Sorry” has it all in terms of pop-punk. The opening channels the former half of the genre, with a verbal chant designed to appeal to a wider audience. That is not to say the rest of the track doesn’t capture the definitive punk sound. With lyrics circling a sense of unabashedness to close out a toxic relationship, it’s a refreshing turn from the cliche-d whining that pop-punk lyricism can fall victim to.
This particular track was produced in conjunction with Evan McKeever of Savage Sound Studios, and had the privilege of being mastered by Mike Kalajian, who has done work for legendary bands like All Time Low, Saosin, and Against the Current. The music video for the song (debuting on the 27th) has delightful imagery with a hue of cyan in almost every shot, featuring the band walking through Brooklyn and performing with plenty of great film techniques like shaky-cam and drone shots of big-city architecture.
League MVP are on the right track with the explosive “Sorry Not Sorry,” and have potential to reel in more than just pop-punk listeners with their genre versatility. As long as the fans of heavier music can get through the pop-like introduction, they’ll discover a very solid pop-punk piece that, personally, I had no issue putting on repeat to write this article for. You can enjoy “Sorry Not Sorry” when it drops this Friday, March 27th!
