Three major games companies are keeping their workers at home for remote work for the time being. This is due, in part, to the Pacific Northwest’s outbreak of the Coronavirus. While the United States is still vastly unaffected by the disease in terms of death and panic, numbers are rising.
Microsoft Executive Vice President Kurt DelBene first kicked off the string of coronavirus cancelations by calling for Redmond and Bay Area offices to shut down where possible until March 25th. If a worker needs to do their work on-site, they will still be asked to come in. This includes things like data centers or retail shops. Those above 60 years old, pregnant, or otherwise at risk due to underlying health conditions are given special consideration.
Bungie, the team behind the Destiny series, is headquartered near the Washington state outbreak in Bellevue. They’ll also implement remote work where possible, and have yet to say if the changes will delay additional updates and content for Destiny 2. Likewise, employees of Nintendo of America, who employ many in California and Washington, are being given time to work from home. The move is specifically mentioned to reflect the company’s belief that “The safety and wellbeing of our employees is our top priority.”
We don’t know when the Coronavirus is going to peak, but things are trending upwards in the United States and around the world. Everyone at Phenixx Gaming wants to extend their thoughts and well wishes to those affected by the virus.
