The landscape of social media was quite a bit different in the first few years of Facebook’s existence. MySpace was the next big thing, and it made for a wonderful way to market one’s music. As of now, though, you would get laughed at for using that social media platform; as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat are the norm. With an updated format, gone are the days of the basic coding that the platform ran on, with simple colors and small text.

Thankfully, we can relive those days and feel waves of nostalgia thanks to “Relics of Myspace Music“, a Facebook page that was created on February 7th, 2020. This page, which has already amassed 7,000+ likes, uses Waybackmachine to view band pages as they would have appeared in the mid to late 2000’s. Some of my personal favorite bands, such as Deftones, The Chariot, and Periphery look a lot different than they do now.

Not only was the social media landscape wildly different, but the music marketing landscape, as well. For example, you could “Skate to Pierce the Veil” in Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground back when video game soundtracks were chock full of quality licensed tracks, or “Join the Mob” with Alesana. Several bands’ headlines mention them being “ON TOUR NOW” or have other instances of call-to-action. Also prominent is a band’s profile views, with many of them being in the millions.

I have hundreds upon hundreds of Facebook pages liked, but only a select few contain posts I look forward to on a very frequent basis. This is a case of a page admin that is dedicated to their craft, being meticulous with their posts while still maintaining a high quantity of them daily. The nostalgia I’ve felt in the few weeks that this page has been up is gargantuan. Relics of Myspace Music is more than worth a like if you were deep into music discovery in the 2000s!
