Bayonetta is more than just a good beat-em-up game and the debut of a now classic SEGA character. In its 4K remaster, the hack-and-slash adventure, starring a sultry witch is not only underrated, but looking better than ever on the Xbox One and PS4.

You might be thinking that the remaster is a great time to revisit Bayonetta. Still, many haven’t played this game yet, either being too young for its original 2009 release, or just simply missing it. Bayonetta stars the titular shapeshifting witch, who faces enemies from all over heaven and hell, a la Dante’s Inferno. The game’s graded rating system on player performance is copied from Devil May Cry, and makes it all the more enjoyable to hack-and-slash, which is at times a bit monotonous.

Something to note about Bayonetta is its strong leaning towards the sexy and erotic. The game’s creators went so far as calling the game’s theme to be “sexiness” and partial nudity.” While using special attacks, the titular character sheds her clothes for sexy ensembles, or complete nudity at times, and drops the enemies’ jaws as she sends them back to hell. Usually, lewd themes don’t do much for me, but I think Bayonetta comes off far more as empowering the sexuality of women than simple fan service.

The most notable changes in the 4K remaster of Bayonetta are astounding. The game is locked in at 60FPS and 4K. Texture filtering makes the experience of slashing enemies from every corner of the screen all the more enjoyable. Other than that, I went back and played the Xbox 360 version via backwards compatibility, and didn’t see much more added. For that, I’m a bit disappointed in what increases and improvements are being marketed as a remaster. If anything, the game’s simply scaled up to better resolutions and textures.

Bayonetta and another Platinum Games classic, Vanquish, have come to the Xbox One and PS4 for the first time in a killer combo pack. You can purchase either game for $24.99, or both for $39.99. I think for someone who hasn’t played Bayonetta, the price is an amazing deal, despite the minimal improvements. Plus, if you want to play Vanquish, you can grab both for a great price and play two amazing games that gave Platinum Games their name.

Right now, Bayonetta 3 is set to come to the Nintendo Switch sometime in the near future. The game is going to be an exclusive to the Nintendo Switch console, as Bayonetta 2 was on the Nintendo Wii U. I think the series is well done, and honestly brings in some fun elements to the Devil May Cry gameplay style. Here’s a great chance to try a classic game of the last 15 years for a low price and new graphical improvements!
