Atlus recently confirmed some scenes which have been deemed homophobic and offensive to some, will be updated, and changed in the upcoming release for the western version of Persona 5 Royal.
During a preview event of Persona 5 Royal with IGN, Atlus communications Manager Ari Advincula reported some changes would be made to some scenes, especially involving Ryuji and two effeminate men. The scenes caught some controversy by some fans during the initial release of Persona 5 in the west, claiming them to be offensive by painting these characters in a negative light.
Relating to this, Advincula said, “We actually were able to go through some of the lines that players may not have received as well, look at that feedback, and then update it for the current generation.” Yu Namba, Senior project manager, who also worked on Persona‘s localization in the west, told GameSpot. “These characters were “portrayed as more like predatory…I think the community had a very strong response to that, and you saw that, and that was definitely altered for Royal.“
Advincula noted changes would be made specifically to the dialogue between Ryuji and the two characters. These changes would be made in both scenes, where the characters appear in game.
So far Atlus hasn’t mentioned how exactly these scenes would be changed, Advincula said the team was “very on the pulse about what’s right and what to do.” and Persona 5 would be “a chance to make it right.” Other than the western version, no reports have been made of any changes to other versions.
Atlus seems to care for its fans and intends to make sure every one their enjoys their games as much as possible; let’s hope the fans will acknowledge this favorably. Expect Persona 5 Royal to steal your heart on March 31st.
