The Final Fantasy 3-vs-3 fighting game first released in the Japanese Arcades in late 2015. It released worldwide as Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT for PS4 in January 2018 before going free-to-play with its release on Windows last year. It’s the third game in the Dissidia branch of the Final Fantasy franchise. It took elements from the PSP games before it, and reintroduced them in a competitive fighting game style. The game has had mixed reception since its release, scoring 67% in Metacritic.

The latest stream for Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT by Square Enix announced the next update for both the Arcade and the PS4 versions. It was stated in the stream that the next major update for the game will be its last one, and there won’t be a sequel for the time being. The game’s director: Takeo Kujiraoka specifically stated that Square Enix “currently has no plans for a Dissidia Final Fantasy 2.

The final major update will come to PS4 and Windows on March 5th, 2020. The update will bring extra DLC content for both Emperor Mateus and Cloud for Darkness, villains of Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy III respectively. It’ll bring a 3rd form and a 5th weapon for each of them as well. Details for the DLC and their prices in Japanese Yen were shown in the stream.

Square Enix wanted to enter the competitive fighting game scene with this title, they even showcased the game at events like EVO. However, Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT never took off as a competitive fighting game as the publishers hoped.

Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT had 28 characters at launch. Additional characters, outfits and weapons were introduced periodically as paid DLC. The current roster boasts 38 characters from all over the Final Fantasy franchise and the final character to be added was Final Fantasy XV’s Ardyn. At the stream, Square Enix assured that the online services for Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT will continue well after the final update.
