I think the competitive shooter scene is pretty adamant that Rainbow Six Siege gets a lot of things right. With a passionate player base reminiscent of the Counter-Strike days, the game is a bonafide phenomenon. I have good news for fans of the game! You can expect more Siege action on the next generation of consoles. That’s right: Rainbow Six Siege is officially coming to the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Most surprisingly, cross-play seems to be a huge feature of the new update to the game.
As of now, the plan is to launch Siege on PS5 and Xbox Series X alongside the consoles. Per Windows Central, the date will depend on when the console’s launch day is, but “our target is to be available right at launch,” says Siege game director Leroy Athanassof. It’s nice to see such a popular game already preparing for the new console generation.
A new kind of cross-play is also being planned, but it’s not what you think. Yes, Ubisoft is still working on Xbox/Playstation cross-play, but the new games will feature cross-generational play. “That means if you play on the next PlayStation, you will be able to matchmake with the previous PlayStation,” says Athanassof. For now, the conversation for Xbox/Playstation cross-play lies solely on Sony and Microsoft.
“Again, this is more a discussion between Microsoft and Sony. We would love to be fully cross-play — have Xbox players matchmaking against the PlayStation players. We are ready to support that,” states Athansassof. In a lot of ways, we hear this all the time. For the most part, game makers want cross-play. I have a feeling this sort of conversation is going to be quite popular in the coming console generation. For now, let’s just be happy our Siege sessions are coming with us to the new consoles.
