My first article with this site was a review of Joji’s “Sanctuary” single that he released last summer. I was (and still am) in love with the track, as it was a bit of a departure from George Miller’s typical Joji style, infusing more sophisticated R&B elements and showcasing serious vocal improvement. To my surprise, Joji has yet again elevated himself with his newest single, “Run”, displaying even more experimentation and new things that end up working very, very well.
“Run” was teased the past week-or-so on Joji’s social media platforms with a video of a stream of lava. I immediately knew that it would get the standout-single treatment, complete with a music video and widespread release. I stayed up until 11pm CST my time on Wednesday night and madly refreshed my Spotify app’s page for Joji. Upon the first listen, I was swept off my feet. Joji had yet again made a significant jump in quality.
This song is guitar-heavy, and features an incredible solo to close it out. The main attraction here is Joji’s vocals. He incorporates vibrato in the early lines of the track, truly making the somber lyrics pop out to the listener. The tragic tale of separation is deeply felt with a focused falsetto in the chorus, signifying the end of a relationship and Joji’s struggle to move on. Speaking in a matter-of-fact tone, he admits the trouble at hand whilst expressing his distress.
The video that accompanies the song shows Joji attempting to escape a never-ending limousine, maneuvering past several party-goers in a more bright mood than him. There are cutaways to Joji on the ground blending in with the cracked surface, emphasizing the symbolism of feeling broken and insignificant. Joji finally breaks free of the limo, and the last minute of the video segues seamlessly into the “Sanctuary” music video and its spaceship setting.

“Run” is by far George Miller’s best musical effort, with both Joji and Pink Guy taken into consideration. The amount of polish and raw talent within this track is monumental, and I foresee Joji getting a considerable boost in popularity after this track hits the ears of new listeners taking a chance on the young artist. Now is as good a time as ever to discover Joji, as his catalog of music is due to grow with more new music this year as his popularity is set to explode.
