It has been a rough road for Square Enix and Final Fantasy VII Remake. Since it was first shown off in 2015 it has shifted developers from Cyberconnect2, who are known for developing titles such as Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm and most recently Dragon Ball Z Kakarot; to an in-house team lead by Tetsuya Nomura who worked on story elements and character design for the original Final Fantasy VII. Last year all seemed to be going smoothly and Final Fantasy VII Remake was looking to be released on schedule on March 3rd, 2020… then it was delayed to April 10th, 2020. This was not too shocking as Final Fantasy VII Remake has been toted as being bigger than the original and shall be split into multiple parts. All these things lead to one question, what about the timed exclusivity on PlayStation?
Final Fantasy VII was originally a PlayStation 1 exclusive and has since appeared on every device under the sun, from Nintendo Switch to phones and tablets. The remake was going to be a one year timed exclusive on PlayStation until March 3rd, 2021, but now the one year deal has shifted to April 10th, 2021, as to follow the game’s delay. Unfortunately for you Xbox and PC players you will have to wait just a little longer to play what will hopefully end up being one of the greatest JRPGs. However, with the extended exclusivity you have more time to go back and play the original Final Fantasy VII and experience the changes between the two.
Final Fantasy VII Remake has been long anticipated by myself and many others. For me Remake kicks off 2020 with a bang and is looking like the strongest year in video game history. It could even top 2017 as my personal best year in games. With games like Cyberpunk 2077, The Last of Us Part II, Persona 5 Royal, a new PlayStation and Xbox and of course Final Fantasy VII Remake; 2020 is shaping up to be a huge year and will be talked about for years to come.
