Slaves is a post-hardcore band from Sacramento, California. The band has seen success in previous albums Beautiful DeathRoutine Breathing, and Through Art We Are All Equals. A vocalist change in 2019 saw Matt McAndrew, previously a runner-up on the wildly-popular The Voice, enter the band. Frankly, he fits like a glove, as the band has released three singles with him and he is a natural fit for the eccentric instrumentation.

January 31st saw their most recent single, “Bury a Lie”, release to critical acclaim and more than 120,000 streams in its first weekend. The track is the first off the band’s new upcoming album, To Better Days, set to release in early 2020. This comes off the heels of the two previous singles, “Heavier” and “Prayers”. All see Matt flexing his vocal prowess to pop-tinged post-hardcore goodness, featuring enjoyable choruses and bridges. The slow pace to these songs display a matured sound over Matt’s awesome vocal runs.

The band is on fire, having a strong backlog to work with in coordination with a lot to look forward to in future releases. Tight mixing and ample experimentation with genres make Slaves a standout act, while Matt’s popularity does not phase his impressive vocal chops. The band’s future is bright, and their concurrent streaming results are proof that they can be at the forefront of the genre with no resistance.

Slaves is a band to watch out for, with a strong amount of mainstream appeal tied to an unwavering, powerful sound. They are at the top of my radar, as their consistency with three separate releases has had them on replay without hesitation. Coming off of Beautiful Death, even with a completely different vocalist, the band is catching a lot of ears, and a tour announcement with some other big names is imminent. Don’t sleep on Slaves, as their best music is yet to come on To Better Days.
