After a decade of listening to Tyler, the Creator and his impressive lineage of albums, he has finally won a Grammy award for Best Rap Album. This is monumental for the artist, who had a gigantic decade of hits from albums like Goblin and Flower Boy. Incorporating influences from other genres into his tunes, like neo-soul, jazz, and R&B, Tyler’s rap offerings differ from the norm, finding a wider audience and compelling people who typically avoid rap to enjoy his music.

Most impressive is that Tyler is also the producer of his albums. IGOR‘s wildly-different songs are thickly-layered, with elements of funk and hip-hop present in certain tracks. This departure saw the album debut at #1 on the Billboard 200, his first one to do so. Much like Flower BoyIGOR features several big names on the songs, such as Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Solange, and Pharrell Williams. These collaborations give the album more star power without them being the highlight of the tracks they’re in.

Tyler’s song “Earfquake” is likely one of his most popular yet, sitting at 250 million plays on Spotify currently. Its infectious chorus has Tyler singing (alongside Playboy Carti’s rapping), a point of contention, but believing in his natural ability to do so. Its radio-friendliness helped it reach more people than it would have if it were another deep cut track. A staple in playlists around the world, this is yet another breakthrough song for the artist.

Tyler’s unbelievable performance of this song as well as “New Magic Wand” was positively mesmerizing at the Grammys. The chaotic presentation may have been offputting to some not accustomed to his unique style, but those that were in for the ride could not be more proud of the man as he would go on to later earn his coveted award, a goal he has held himself to since 2011. While I believe he very well should have earned it for Flower Boy, my personal favorite Tyler record, I am thrilled he has it either way. Congrats go out to Tyler for this massive accomplishment!
