Edmund McMillen is a prolific figure in the world of indie games, with Super Meat Boy in particular helping launch his name. Last year, he released the Legend of Bum-bo, a match-three puzzle game spin-off to the Binding of Isaac franchise. One may wonder, what kinda stuff does McMillen have for this year?

Before Super Meat Boy, in 2004, there was Gish, a platformer where you play as a sentient ball of tar. Back in December, McMillen announced that Gish would be getting a 15th anniversary update. With his general update tweets on the 26th, McMillen further revealed that this new version of Gish will be coming to Steam sometime soon and it will also have a physical edition with extra goods. Further commemorating the occasion, the game will also be the subject of a video by Noclip, a Youtube channel dedicated to making video game documentaries.

Mew-Genics also received a brief update. Mew-Genics was an ambitious project that aimed to be a dark “crazy cat lady” simulator that McMillen started years ago. It’s been an on-again-off-again project, with McMillen announcing that he started working on it again with Tyler Glaiel, Krystal Fleming and Ridiculon back in June of last year. Thankfully, development still seems to be in progress for this one. While it’s still a cat hoarding/breeding game, McMillen has now teased combat, specifically calling it “like a cat army dnd Adventure,” with more news on that later.

Though this is already known, The Binding of Isaac: Repentance, was reiterated to be coming out during the summer. This upcoming final expansion is interesting because it includes a bunch of material from The Binding of Isaac: Antibirth (pictured in header), a popular fan expansion that was held up to the same standards as Afterbirth+, the previous official expansion. Afterbirth+ touted the introduction of modding tools, though it wouldn’t have been able to accommodate most of the stuff from Antibirth, seeing as Antibirth also introduced whole new floors to explore. With Repentance however, the Isaac team is now able to embrace this effort by the fan community, along with mixing it with some of their own new stuff.

On top of all this, Edmund McMillen also mentioned work on a side project called Tapeworm. Unlike everything else here, it has a more concrete release window on late-February/early-March. Besides the official art, not much is known about it. Though, given the name and McMillen’s pre-existing affinity for putting gross-out stuff in his games, it’s probably going to be disgusting.

McMillen’s been around for years, yet he’s still going strong into this new decade. The Binding of Isaac may finally be coming to an end this year, but this man clearly has a lot of ideas to work on.
