It is not a secret here at Phenixx Gaming, that I am a big fan of the Atelier franchise. It carves itself a unique space in the JRPG sphere, and I’ve loved it since the PS2 era. I’ve also talked before about the gaming industry having a longevity problem when games aren’t ported to current-gen consoles. The Atelier Dusk Trilogy Deluxe pack solves that problem and provides three great Atelier games in one shiny package.
The Atelier Dusk Trilogy Deluxe Pack contains Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk DX, Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky DX, and Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea DX. Each of these three games is a sprawling RPG with over 100 hours of gameplay and a fair bit of replay value due to there being multiple endings for each game. That alone makes this pack worth the price you’re paying, but let’s dig into what each game offers, shall we?
The first game, Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk DX, puts you in the role of Ayesha, a young apothecary who is searching for answers about her missing sister. As stated in the official press materials for the game, you will be able to keep a record of Ayesha’s adventures through the “weave memories system.” By performing in-game actions, players are rewarded with points used to fill Ayesha’s diary.
Depending on what is written, you can unlock certain synthesis recipes, bonuses, and more. Record the various events that occur throughout your quest to find Ayesha’s sister, then reflect upon those memories as you continue to develop your characters throughout the game. Because this trilogy pack contains the DX version of Atelier Ayesha, you also receive all DLC costumes, party members, accessories, and dungeons that were released for the original game.
The second game, Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky DX, marks one of the few games in the franchise to allow you to play as one of two different protagonists. You can either play as Logix Fiscario, known as Logy, or Escha Malier. Escha and Logy work for the development department and find themselves investigating the Dusk phenomena.
Escha and Logy’s job is to survey the city, and they are required to complete their investigation within four months. There are optional tasks added throughout the game, which can give various bonuses such as raising their stats or receiving reference materials earlier than normal upon completion. The two protagonists play very differently, as Escha knows more about ancient alchemy, while Logy focuses more on modern alchemy.
Each protagonist has a different side of the story, with unique party members and storylines. Also, like Atelier Ayesha, Atelier Escha & Logy DX contains all the DLC for the original release of the game, including costumes, characters, dungeons and more.
The last, but not least, part of this pack is Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea DX. In Atelier Shallie, you are put in the role of either Shallistera or Shallotte, two characters each with their own storyline, background, and ambitions. Shallistera wants to find a way to save her slowly dying homeland, while Shallotte wants to fulfill her dreams and find success for her atelier.
Throughout the game, new things that your characters “want to do” or “want to try” pop up. These represent the inner voices of the characters and are known as life tasks. Completing these tasks helps advance the story, and if they are completed within a given time frame, you can get bonuses such as EXP.
Life tasks will change depending on the player’s playstyle, so everyone can enjoy the journey however you want. Whether you want to put effort into synthesizing and completing quests, focusing on battle, or simply running around the magical world when you have time, Atelier Shallie lets you approach things in the way that works best for you.
Also, as with the previous games, Atelier Shallie DX contains all the DLC from the original release, such as costumes, extra characters, and other such add-ons. Personally, I think with the DLC included, it gives you even more of an incentive to pick up this pack. You can buy each game individually on the Nintendo eShop as well, but why buy them individually when you can get them bundled together at a better price?
There are also enhancements made to all 3 games, because of the shift from previous generation consoles to the Nintendo Switch. They added features to speed up combat, allow you to run faster out in the field, and added in higher resolution graphics and textures, to make the games look and feel smoother while you play.
Sure, the price of the bundle may seem steep at a $90 price tag, but when you’re getting 3 massive RPGs, with all the DLC, enhanced for current-gen platforms at a single price, how can you argue with that? During my time with the pack, I can also mention that there (so far) have been no bugs to speak of, as well as absolutely no problems with crashing.
Each game builds on the Atelier formula with a cast of quirky, fun characters, deep alchemy mechanics, and strategic turn-based combat. All of these things together are a recipe for hours of entertainment, and having the entire Dusk Trilogy with you at home or on the go is just perfect for any RPG enthusiast.
The graphics are beautiful, the characters and environments are colorful, and you get to see the evolution of the world of Dusk across three games. It is really fascinating to see how characters grow and evolve, which is something I love about the Atelier Arland Trilogy which you can also find on the Nintendo Switch.
Additionally, unlike a few of the Atelier games released on the Switch, all three of the games in the Atelier Dusk Trilogy Deluxe Pack, are fully voiced in English and Japanese, allowing you to switch between both languages depending on your preference.
To wrap this up, the Atelier Dusk Trilogy Deluxe Pack is not only full of great content, but it provides three unique RPG experiences, all bundled together. If you have a friend or family member that wants a solid RPG to play or you know someone that wants to get into the Atelier franchise, this is a great starting point for any new or returning player.
